Every YouTube video has a set of thumbnail images. The largest, HD (1280×720), exists only when the uploader added a custom high-resolution thumbnail or the video itself is HD; the 480×360 version is always available. This tool shows only the sizes that actually exist for the video. Thumbnails belong to the video’s creator — use them for reference, previews or with permission.

Why use it

Why use our YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

  • Every available size

HD (1280×720), SD (640×480), high (480×360), medium (320×180) and small (120×90) — only the sizes that really exist are shown.

  • Videos and Shorts

Works with youtube.com/watch, youtu.be, Shorts, live and embed links. Extra parameters like timestamps are ignored.

  • Real title and channel

We look up the video title and channel through YouTube’s public oEmbed service so you know you have the right video.

  • Instant and free

No sign-up, no limits for normal use, and the images come straight from YouTube’s image servers.

Guide

Everything about YouTube thumbnails

Which thumbnail sizes exist?

YouTube stores several versions of every thumbnail. The 480×360 “hqdefault” image always exists. The HD “maxresdefault” (1280×720) is created when the video is HD or the creator uploaded a custom high-resolution thumbnail; older or low-resolution videos don’t have it. The 640×480 “sddefault” version exists for most videos, while 320×180 and 120×90 are small previews. Our tool checks each one and hides any that are missing.

Why some thumbnails have black bars

The 640×480 and 480×360 versions use a 4:3 shape, so a 16:9 video thumbnail is shown with black bars at the top and bottom. Choose the HD or 320×180 version for a clean 16:9 image without bars.

Using thumbnails responsibly

A thumbnail is the creator’s artwork. It’s fine to save one for reference, research, a presentation about the video, or to check how your own thumbnail looks. If you want to reuse someone else’s thumbnail on your website, in a video or for promotion, ask the creator first or make sure your use is covered by fair use or a licence.

Tips for creators

YouTube recommends custom thumbnails of 1280×720 pixels (16:9), under 2 MB, in JPG, PNG or GIF. Saving the thumbnails of your own uploads is a quick way to check how they look at every size people see — from the small sidebar preview to the full HD image.

Help

Frequently asked questions

Why is the HD (1280×720) thumbnail missing?

YouTube only creates it for HD videos or custom thumbnails. Older and low-resolution videos have 480×360 as their largest size.

Does it work with YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Paste a youtube.com/shorts/ link like any other video link.

Can I download the video itself?

Not here. YouTube’s terms don’t allow third-party downloads. YouTube Premium members can download videos in the YouTube app and on youtube.com, and creators can download their own uploads from YouTube Studio.

Can I use a thumbnail on my own site or video?

Thumbnails are the creator’s work. Ask for permission unless your use is covered by fair use or a licence.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limits for normal use.

Does it work for private or unlisted videos?

Unlisted videos work if you have the link. Private and deleted videos have no public thumbnails, so nothing will be shown.

What format are the thumbnails?

They are JPG images, served directly by YouTube.

Can I get the thumbnail of a live stream?

Yes — paste the live or watch link. The thumbnail may change while the stream is live.
