About VLC Media Player
VLC media player is a free, open-source player from VideoLAN, a non-profit organisation based in France. It is famous for playing almost anything — MKV, MP4, AVI, WebM, MOV, MP3, FLAC, DVDs, audio CDs and network streams — without installing extra codec packs.
VLC contains no ads, spyware or user tracking. Beyond simple playback it can convert files between formats, record your screen, play streams from a URL, add subtitles and adjust audio and video sync, which makes it a useful toolbox even if you already have another player.
Best for: Anyone who wants one free player that opens every video and audio file.
System requirements
- Windows: 64-bit (x64), 32-bit (x86), ARM64

Safety
Where these links come from
Versions and download addresses are read automatically from winget (Windows) and Homebrew (macOS), the public package catalogues used by millions of developers. We only show a link when it points to the developer’s own official domain, and we never host, repackage or bundle the files — your browser downloads them directly from the developer.
Check the file after downloading (optional)
Compare the SHA-256 checksum shown above with the one of the file you downloaded. If they match, the file is exactly the one published by the developer.
- Windows: open PowerShell in your Downloads folder and run
Get-FileHash .\filename - Mac: open Terminal and run
shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/filename
Help
VLC Media Player: frequently asked questions
Is this the official VLC Media Player download?
Yes. The download buttons link directly to the developer’s own servers (download.videolan.org, get.videolan.org). DownloadFrom.net does not host, modify or bundle VLC Media Player; we only list the official files and their SHA-256 checksums so you can verify them.
Which Windows file should I download?
For most PCs, choose the recommended 64-bit installer (.exe). Pick an ARM64 file only for Windows on ARM devices (for example Snapdragon laptops), and MSI packages if you deploy software for an organisation. To check your PC, open Settings → System → About and look at “System type”.
Apple Silicon or Intel — which Mac file do I need?
Open the Apple menu → About This Mac. If it shows “Chip: Apple M…”, download the Apple Silicon version; if it shows “Processor: … Intel”, download the Intel version.
Is VLC safe to download?
Yes, when it comes from VideoLAN’s own servers. The download links on this page point to download.videolan.org / get.videolan.org; avoid copies from unofficial sites, which have been used to bundle unwanted software.
Is VLC really free?
Yes. VLC is free and open source under the GNU GPL, with no paid version, ads or in-app purchases.
Which file should I choose on Windows?
Most people should use the 64-bit installer (.exe). The .msi is for IT administrators deploying VLC to many PCs, and the .zip is a portable version that runs without installation.
