About HandBrake
HandBrake is a free, open-source video transcoder built by volunteers. It takes videos you already have and converts them to modern formats — MP4, MKV or WebM — that play on phones, tablets, TVs, game consoles and web browsers.
Under the hood it uses proven encoders such as x264, x265 and SVT-AV1. Ready-made presets cover common devices and quality levels, while advanced users can fine-tune resolution, bitrate, filters, audio tracks and subtitles. HandBrake does not remove copy protection from DVDs or Blu-rays.
Best for: Shrinking large videos or converting them into a format your device can play.
System requirements
- Windows: 64-bit (x64), ARM64

Safety
Where these links come from
Versions and download addresses are read automatically from winget (Windows) and Homebrew (macOS), the public package catalogues used by millions of developers. We only show a link when it points to the developer’s own official domain, and we never host, repackage or bundle the files — your browser downloads them directly from the developer.
Check the file after downloading (optional)
Compare the SHA-256 checksum shown above with the one of the file you downloaded. If they match, the file is exactly the one published by the developer.
- Windows: open PowerShell in your Downloads folder and run
Get-FileHash .\filename - Mac: open Terminal and run
shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/filename
Help
HandBrake: frequently asked questions
Is this the official HandBrake download?
Yes. The download buttons link directly to the developer’s own servers (github.com/HandBrake, handbrake.fr). DownloadFrom.net does not host, modify or bundle HandBrake; we only list the official files and their SHA-256 checksums so you can verify them.
Which Windows file should I download?
For most PCs, choose the recommended 64-bit installer (.exe). Pick an ARM64 file only for Windows on ARM devices (for example Snapdragon laptops), and MSI packages if you deploy software for an organisation. To check your PC, open Settings → System → About and look at “System type”.
Is HandBrake free?
Yes. HandBrake is free and open source under the GPL-2.0, with no ads or paid version.
Can HandBrake make videos smaller?
Yes — that is one of its main uses. Choosing a modern codec such as H.265 or AV1 and a suitable quality setting can reduce file size considerably while keeping good quality.
Can HandBrake rip protected DVDs or Blu-rays?
No. HandBrake does not include tools to remove copy protection; it works with unprotected discs and video files.
