Guide
Which image format should you use?
JPG — for photos everywhere
JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely supported image format. It is ideal for photos and works in every app, website, printer and phone. It doesn’t support transparency, and repeated editing and re-saving slowly reduces quality.
PNG — for screenshots, logos and transparency
PNG is lossless, so text and sharp lines stay crisp, and it supports transparent backgrounds. Photos saved as PNG are usually much larger than JPG, so use PNG for graphics rather than pictures.
WebP — for websites
WebP was designed for the web. It supports both lossy and lossless compression plus transparency, and typically produces files 25–35% smaller than JPG or PNG at the same quality. All modern browsers support it, but some older desktop programs may not open it — convert WebP to JPG or PNG when you need to share or edit an image in those apps.
What about HEIC photos from iPhone?
HEIC can only be opened by Safari among major browsers. If you use Safari, you can convert HEIC to JPG here. On other browsers, change your iPhone camera setting to “Most Compatible” (Settings → Camera → Formats) so new photos are saved as JPG.
Help
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert WebP to JPG?
Choose your WebP files, select JPG as the output format and download.
Can I convert HEIC (iPhone) photos?
Only in Safari, which can read HEIC. Other browsers can’t open HEIC files yet.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Conversion happens in your browser.
Will converting reduce quality?
PNG output is lossless. JPG and WebP use the quality you set; 92% is visually identical for most images.
What happens to transparency?
PNG and WebP keep it. JPG doesn’t support transparency, so it’s filled with white.
Why does my converted JPG have a white background?
JPG can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. Choose PNG or WebP to keep them transparent.
Can I convert animated GIFs?
Only the first frame is converted. To turn a video into an animated GIF, use our Video to GIF tool.
Will converting PNG to JPG reduce the file size?
For photos, usually yes — often dramatically. For screenshots with text, PNG may stay smaller and sharper.
