About Audacity
Audacity is the world’s best-known free audio editor and recorder, used for podcasts, voice-overs, music and restoring old recordings. It is open source (GPL) and maintained by Muse Group together with a community of contributors.
Audacity 4, released in September 2026, brought the biggest update in its history: a new optional interface with a dark mode, non-destructive editing where clips can overlap and be trimmed back, clip grouping, per-track meters and “workspaces” for different jobs. The classic look is still available if you prefer it.
Best for: Podcasters, students and musicians who need a capable audio editor at no cost.

Is this the official Audacity download?

Which Windows file should I download?
For most PCs, choose the recommended 64-bit MSI installer (.msi). Pick an ARM64 file only for Windows on ARM devices (for example Snapdragon laptops), and MSI packages if you deploy software for an organisation. To check your PC, open Settings → System → About and look at “System type”.
Apple Silicon or Intel — which Mac file do I need?
Open the Apple menu → About This Mac. If it shows “Chip: Apple M…”, download the Apple Silicon version; if it shows “Processor: … Intel”, download the Intel version.
Is Audacity free?
Yes. Audacity is free and open source; there is no paid version of the editor.
Can Audacity remove background noise?
Yes. Record a few seconds of silence, use it as a noise profile, then apply the Noise Reduction effect to the whole recording.
Can I export MP3 with Audacity?
Yes. MP3 export is built in on current versions — no separate encoder download is needed.
