About PuTTY
PuTTY is a free, open-source SSH and Telnet client for Windows, written by Simon Tatham. It lets you open a terminal session on a remote server — for example a Linux web server or a network device — and work on it as if you were sitting at its console.
The package includes companion tools: PuTTYgen to create SSH keys, Pageant to hold keys in memory, and PSCP/PSFTP and Plink for file transfer and command-line use. Although Windows now has a built-in SSH client, PuTTY remains popular for its saved sessions and serial-port support.
Best for: Connecting to Linux servers, routers and switches from Windows.

Safety
Where these links come from
Versions and download addresses are read automatically from winget (Windows) and Homebrew (macOS), the public package catalogues used by millions of developers. We only show a link when it points to the developer’s own official domain, and we never host, repackage or bundle the files — your browser downloads them directly from the developer.
Check the file after downloading (optional)
Compare the SHA-256 checksum shown above with the one of the file you downloaded. If they match, the file is exactly the one published by the developer.
- Windows: open PowerShell in your Downloads folder and run
Get-FileHash .\filename - Mac: open Terminal and run
shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/filename
Help
PuTTY: frequently asked questions
Is this the official PuTTY download?
Yes. The download buttons link directly to the developer’s own servers (the.earth.li). DownloadFrom.net does not host, modify or bundle PuTTY; we only list the official files and their SHA-256 checksums so you can verify them.
Which Windows file should I download?
For most PCs, choose the recommended 64-bit MSI installer (.msi). Pick an ARM64 file only for Windows on ARM devices (for example Snapdragon laptops), and MSI packages if you deploy software for an organisation. To check your PC, open Settings → System → About and look at “System type”.
Is PuTTY free?
Yes. PuTTY is free and open source under the MIT licence.
Where is the official PuTTY download?
The official site is chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ (putty.org links there). The installers listed here come from the official the.earth.li mirror used by that page.
Do I still need PuTTY on Windows 10/11?
Windows includes an OpenSSH client, which is enough for many users. PuTTY is still handy for saved sessions, serial connections and its graphical key tools.
