About Git
Git is the free, open-source distributed version control system created by Linus Torvalds in 2005 and used by almost every software project today. It tracks every change to your files, lets you work on branches and merge them, and synchronises with services such as GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket.
The Windows download is Git for Windows, which provides the full Git command line plus Git Bash (a Bash shell with common Unix tools), Git GUI, and Git Credential Manager for secure sign-in to hosting services.
Best for: Anyone writing code, or collaborating on files with a history of changes.
System requirements
- Windows: 64-bit (x64), ARM64

Safety
Where these links come from
Versions and download addresses are read automatically from winget (Windows) and Homebrew (macOS), the public package catalogues used by millions of developers. We only show a link when it points to the developer’s own official domain, and we never host, repackage or bundle the files — your browser downloads them directly from the developer.
Check the file after downloading (optional)
Compare the SHA-256 checksum shown above with the one of the file you downloaded. If they match, the file is exactly the one published by the developer.
- Windows: open PowerShell in your Downloads folder and run
Get-FileHash .\filename - Mac: open Terminal and run
shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/filename
Help
Git: frequently asked questions
Is this the official Git download?
Yes. The download buttons link directly to the developer’s own servers (github.com/git-for-windows). DownloadFrom.net does not host, modify or bundle Git; we only list the official files and their SHA-256 checksums so you can verify them.
Which Windows file should I download?
For most PCs, choose the recommended 64-bit installer (.exe). Pick an ARM64 file only for Windows on ARM devices (for example Snapdragon laptops), and MSI packages if you deploy software for an organisation. To check your PC, open Settings → System → About and look at “System type”.
Is Git the same as GitHub?
No. Git is the version control program on your computer; GitHub is an online service that hosts Git repositories.
Is Git free?
Yes. Git and Git for Windows are free and open source (GPL-2.0).
How do I install Git on a Mac?
macOS offers to install Git with Apple’s Command Line Developer Tools the first time you run git in Terminal. Installers are also listed on git-scm.com.
