Frames are captured from the video in your browser and encoded into a GIF with an optimised colour palette. Short clips (3–8 seconds) at 480 px wide and 10–15 frames per second give the best balance of smoothness and file size for chats and social posts. GIFs have no sound.

Guide

How to make a great GIF from a video

Keep it short

GIFs store every frame as an image, so file size grows quickly with length. Three to eight seconds is the sweet spot for reactions, product demos and tutorials. Many chat apps and forums limit GIF uploads to around 8–15 MB.

Choosing width and frame rate

A 480-pixel width looks sharp in messages and on social media. Use 320 pixels to keep files small, or 640 pixels when detail matters. Ten frames per second is smooth enough for most clips and keeps the file light; 15 fps is better for fast motion. As a rough guide, a 5-second clip at 480 px and 10 fps is usually between 1 and 4 MB, depending on how much the picture changes.

Why GIF colours can look different

The GIF format can only show 256 colours per frame. Our encoder chooses the best 256 colours for every frame, which works well for most footage. Scenes with smooth gradients, such as skies, may show some banding — that is a limit of the format itself.

When to use something other than GIF

For long clips or when you need sound, a short MP4 is far smaller and better quality. GIF is ideal when you need an image that loops automatically and works everywhere, including email and older apps.

Help

Frequently asked questions

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 15 seconds. GIF files grow quickly, so shorter clips load faster and are accepted by more apps.

How do I make the GIF smaller?

Use a smaller width (320 px), 10 frames per second, or a shorter clip.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Everything happens on your device.

Which video formats work?

Any video your browser can play — usually MP4, MOV and WebM.

Does the GIF keep the sound?

No, the GIF format has no audio.

Can I make a GIF from a YouTube video?

Only from video files you have on your device. If the video is yours, you can download it from YouTube Studio first.

Will the GIF loop?

Yes, the GIF loops forever, which is what most apps expect.

Why is my GIF bigger than the video?

Video formats compress motion very efficiently; GIF stores whole frames. Try a shorter clip, 320 px width or 10 fps.
