The conversion happens entirely on your device using your browser’s built-in audio decoder and an MP3 encoder, so nothing is sent to our server and it works even on a slow connection. MP4, MOV, M4A, WebM and most other formats your browser can play are supported. Very long videos need a lot of memory; files up to about 20 minutes work best, especially on phones.

Guide

Guide to converting video to MP3

What happens during conversion

Your browser reads the audio track from the video using its built-in decoder, then our MP3 encoder (the open-source LAME encoder compiled for the web) turns it into an MP3 file. The video picture is simply discarded. Because the work happens on your computer or phone, the speed depends on your device, not your internet connection — a 10-minute video usually takes a few seconds on a modern laptop.

Which bitrate should you choose?

Bitrate is how much data is used for each second of audio. 128 kbps is perfectly clear for lectures, podcasts and voice notes and makes small files (about 1 MB per minute). 192 kbps is a good balance for music (about 1.4 MB per minute). 320 kbps gives the highest MP3 quality (about 2.4 MB per minute). Note that converting can’t add quality that wasn’t in the original: if the video’s audio is low quality, a higher bitrate only makes the file bigger.

Common uses

Turn a recorded lecture or meeting into audio you can listen to on the go, extract the soundtrack from your own videos for editing, save a voice memo from a screen recording, or make a podcast episode from a video interview you recorded.

Large files and phones

The whole audio track is held in memory while converting, so very long videos need a lot of RAM. Videos up to about 20 minutes work well everywhere; on a computer you can usually go up to 30 minutes. Keep the page open until the download button appears.

Help

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and converted inside your browser and never leaves your device.

Which bitrate should I choose?

192 kbps is a good default. 320 kbps gives the best quality and larger files; 128 kbps is fine for speech and podcasts.

Why did my file fail to convert?

Your browser couldn’t decode its audio. Try another browser (Chrome and Edge support the most formats) or a shorter file.

Can I convert a YouTube link to MP3?

No. This tool converts files you already have on your device. Converting YouTube videos isn’t allowed by YouTube’s terms.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in an up-to-date browser. Keep the page open until the MP3 is ready.

Will the MP3 keep the original quality?

MP3 is a compressed format, but at 192–320 kbps most people can’t hear a difference from the original audio.

Can I convert audio files too?

Yes. WAV, M4A, OGG and other audio files your browser can play can be converted to MP3 as well.

Is there a file size limit?

Files up to 1 GB and 30 minutes long are accepted. Shorter files convert faster and use less memory.
