Fake download sites are one of the most common ways malware and adware spread. downloadfrom.net lists software downloads under strict rules so that every button leads to the genuine file from the people who make it.
1. Official sources only
Versions and download addresses are read automatically from two public, community-reviewed package catalogues: winget (Microsoft’s Windows Package Manager repository) for Windows and Homebrew for macOS. Release-note links may also come from the developer’s official GitHub releases.
2. An allowlist for every app
For each app we keep a list of the developer’s own download locations — for example download.videolan.org for VLC, or the project’s own GitHub repository. A link is only shown if it points to one of those locations over HTTPS. Anything else is rejected automatically, even if it appears in a catalogue.
3. No re-hosting, repackaging or bundling
We never host, modify, wrap or bundle software. When you click Download, your browser fetches the file directly from the developer’s server — the same file you would get from the official website, with no custom installer, toolbar or extra offers added by us.
4. Checksums you can verify
Where the catalogue provides it, we show the file’s SHA-256 checksum next to each download. After downloading, you can compare it yourself: on Windows run Get-FileHash in PowerShell; on a Mac run shasum -a 256 in Terminal. If the values match, the file is exactly the one published.
5. Checked every day
Every app is re-checked roughly once a day. If a check fails, we keep showing the last verified version and date rather than a broken or unverified link. Each page shows when its links were last checked.
6. Reviewed before publishing
A new app page is only published after a person has reviewed it. Descriptions are written by us and checked against the developer’s own website; important limits — trial periods, paid plans, personal-use-only licences — are stated clearly on the page.
What we will not list
- Software whose official installer bundles adware or unwanted extra programs.
- Files that are only available from unofficial mirrors.
- Cracks, keygens, “modded” or pirated software of any kind.
Independence and advertising
downloadfrom.net is not affiliated with the developers listed, and listings are not paid placements. If the site shows ads, they are never placed on or styled to look like download buttons.
